The Centre for Rural Local Government is Australia’s dedicated national body created to empower, connect and advocate for rural and remote local governments. Established by Professor Joseph Drew, the Centre exists to ensure that the unique voices, needs, and contributions of rural and remote communities are heard and respected at every level of government.
We provide a platform for collaboration, research, and policy advocacy—uniting councils across Australia to share ideas, drive innovation, and influence decisions that affect the future of regional and rural Australia.
Our Mission
To strengthen rural and remote local government by fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and advocating for fair and sustainable policy outcomes at state and national levels.
Our Vision
Thriving, resilient rural and remote communities supported by capable, connected, and confident local governments.
Who We Are
Founded by Professor Joseph Drew, a nationally recognised authority on local government reform, the Centre brings together leaders, practitioners, academics, and advocates with a shared commitment to empowering regional Australia. We work with local councils to identify common challenges, build capacity, and create opportunities for sustainable development and governance.
Rural and remote councils are the backbone of Australia’s regions. They manage vast areas, deliver essential services, and nurture communities that are critical to the nation’s economic, cultural, and environmental well-being.
Yet too often, these councils are overlooked in policy discussions. The Centre for Rural Local Government exists to change that by ensuring rural voices are united, informed, and empowered.
